Parokya ni Edgar

Image and video hosting by TinyPic

Parokya ni Edgar (English translation: Edgar's Parish) is a Filipino band that was formed in 1993 by a group of college students. The band is famous and most lauded for its original rock novelty songs and often satirical covers of popular songs. The band has since transcended musical genres, varying styles from one song to another - alternative rock to pop rock, funk to rapcore, and so on - while providing comic relief to their listeners. Despite having "Edgar" in the band's name, none of the members go by it.

Naming themselves Comic Relief, the band originally consisted of three vocalists – Chito Miranda, Jeric Estaco, and Vinci Montaner, and two guitarists - Mikko Yap and Gab Chee Kee. They regularly played in after-school jam sessions, before performing an opening number for an Eraserheads concert. This served as their break into the local music scene and prompted them to add a drummer and a bassist – schoolmate Dindin Moreno and Buwi Meneses, respectively. The same performance also marked the change of the band's name to Parokya ni Edgar. After high school, Mikko and Jeric decided to withdraw from the band to pursue other interests. As a replacement, the remaining band members invited their friend guitarist Darius Semaña (lead guitar) to their fold.

The name Parokya Ni Edgar came from a class joke by Jeric Estaco recited in one of their classes in high school. Sources state that the class subject was Filipino, and it all started when the teacher asked him where the father of Jose Rizal's fictional hero, Crisostomo Ibarra (in the novel Noli Me Tangere), was educated. It was said that Jeric answered the teacher with the daft remark "sa Parokya ni Edgar". However up to now, the exact background behind this is unknown.
In the early 1990s, the band started performing regularly in Club Dredd, one of the famous clubs in Manila during that time. The band slowly gained popularity during the height of the Filipino rock explosion, with the local rock community opening up to the influence of foreign grunge acts such as Nirvana, Pearl Jam and Soundgarden.
Eventually, the late managing director of Universal Records, Bella Dy Tan, signed them as contract artists after witnessing one of their performances at Club Dredd.
Soon their initial recordings such as Buloy, Trip and Lutong Bahay were heard across Philippines through radio stations. Their first album, Khangkhungkherrnitz became a triple platinum hit in the Philippines having sold 120,000 units. The other 3 albums include Buruguduystunstugudunstuy (triple platinum), Jingle Balls Silent Night Holy Cow (gold), and Gulong Itlog Gulong (triple platinum).

Jacoby Shaddix of Papa Roach

Jacoby Dakota Shaddix (born July 28, 1976 ) was born in Mariposa, California and is the lead singer for the rock group Papa Roach, as well as the lead singer for the unofficially defunct post-hardcore band Fight the Sky under the pseudonym 'John Doe.' Shaddix was also the host of MTV show 'Scarred'. In an interview in 2004, Jacoby said that he became disenchanted with Hip hop and what it represents in the media and all he wants to be is a rocker. However, in 2012, Jacoby Shaddix started rapping again in The Connection album and Jacoby even states that rapping again felt good and great.

Shaddix's parents divorced when he was six. Shaddix has two younger brothers, Trevor and Bryson. In his youth, he went to Vacaville High School where he played the clarinet in the school orchestra. Shaddix and Dave Buckner founded Papa Roach in 1993. Shaddix started out playing drums but found quickly that Dave was much better than him. Shaddix then decided to pick up bass to play a part in a band but his bass was stolen. After this he defaulted to singing. While 17, Shaddix started to work as a dishwasher to be able to finance his apartment with a friend. This job changed to a janitor in a hospital until he gave it all up for Papa Roach in 1999 so he could dedicate himself to the music he loved.

On July 19, 1997, Shaddix married his high-school sweetheart, Kelly Michelle Shaddix, with whom he has three sons, Makaile Cielo Shaddix, born March 24, 2002 and Jagger Monroe Shaddix, born September 13, 2004, Brixton Gabriel Shaddix, born September 17, 2013[3] Jacoby regularly brings Kelly and his sons on tour with him. Jacoby and Kelly had a rocky relationship. It was reported that they split up during the making of the 2012 record The Connection, and was confirmed during an interview with the band on Guitar Center: Sessions. Jacoby has written about their dysfunctional relationship in the songs She Loves Me Not, Time and Time Again, Decompression Period, Wish You Never Met Me, Leader of the Broken Hearts and Walking Dead. The couple have since reconciled. On March 5, 2013, during an interview with Rockline Radio, Jacoby confirmed that his wife was pregnant with their third child. At the 2013 Relentless Kerrang! Awards Shaddix revealed that they were expecting another boy. On September 17, 2013 Brixton Gabriel Shaddix was born. He was named after the Brixton Academy in London.

Although he has struggled with drug addiction in the past, Jacoby's main problem is with alcohol. In an early interview he admitted that he needed alcohol to help deal with not seeing his family while on tour. "I've got a little photo album of my baby, every day I just look at it and go, "You're so cute, man. I love you. And then I also need a bottle of vodka." Jacoby has written about his battles with alcohol in the songs "Binge" and "Black Clouds". Jacoby has also spoken of these issues in interviews. "[I was] a cutter for a while, and it really just got to a point. I was suicidal, and then I wanted to die, and then I realized that I didn't want to die. It was just like this whole - I was just in a cloud, so I had to get sober." Shaddix has written about his addictions and suicidal thoughts in the songs Last Resort and Before I Die.

Shaddix has many tattoos. One of the first tattoos he got was his wife's name across his left arm, done when he was 21 years old . Many of his tattoos are text pieces: "Born To Rock" is across his clavicle, 'love' and 'hate' on his left and right hands, as well as the name's of sons on each wrist. On the left side of his chest, he has a queen surrounded by water, and on the right is a king surrounded by flames. Jacoby has said this represents the good and evil in him. On his right is a scroll which reads, "Here Lies Jacoby Dakota Shaddix", "Born With Nothing, Die With Everything", which is also the name of a song from LoveHateTragedy. On his left arm he has a house in flames, which references the band's song "Broken Home", and a coffin which references their song "Harder Than A Coffin Nail". On the back of his neck, Jacoby and his wife Kelly have the Chinese symbol for love, which he spoke about in an episode of MTV Cribs.

Papa Roach

Image and video hosting by TinyPic

Papa Roach is an American hard rock band from Vacaville, California. Their first major-label release was the triple-platinum album Infest (2000). The group's success continued with their gold album Lovehatetragedy (2002), their platinum album Getting Away with Murder (2004), The Paramour Sessions (2006), Metamorphosis (2009), Time for Annihilation (2010), and The Connection (2012). Papa Roach has sold more than 20 million album copies worldwide and is known for their songs "Last Resort", "Between Angels and Insects", "She Loves Me Not", "Getting Away with Murder", "Scars", "...To Be Loved", "Forever", "Hollywood Whore", and "Lifeline".

The formation of Papa Roach began in January 1993, when lead singer Jacoby Shaddix and drummer Dave Buckner met on the Vacaville High School football field during an intense match, where the two ended up talking about music. They were later joined by trombonist Ben Luther and bass guitarist Will James. They decided to enter the school's talent show, where they performed a version of Jimi Hendrix's song "Fire", but they ultimately did not win the contest. In March 1993, trombonist Ben Luther was replaced by lead guitarist Jerry Horton from nearby Vanden High School. Horton was introduced to the band through his girlfriend, who was a fan. However, Jerry was at first apprehensive about joining the band because Jacoby, Buckner, and Will all went to different high schools. At this point, Papa Roach were practicing every day and touring on every gig they could get. Their first tour van was called Moby Dick, where Jacoby was inspired to come up with his first stage name "Coby Dick". The band's name comes from Shaddix's step-grandfather, Howard William Roatch, who was nicknamed Papa Roach. Roatch committed suicide in 2006 because he was diagnosed with terminal cancer. The band pay homage to him with The Paramour Sessions and during live performances of the song "Roses On My Grave". Then they met Jaymin Runnels and they became famous "it was a hell of a ride with that guy" quoted by Jacoby Shaddix "i just love hanging with him every day"

In 1994, Papa Roach released their first ever EP titled Potatoes for Christmas. Drummer Dave Buckner was temporarily replaced by Ryan Brown, as Buckner was spending the year in Seattle studying art. In 1995, they released a demo at Sound Farm Studios titled Caca Bonita. By this time Buckner was back. In 1996, they replaced original bass guitarist Will James, who had become heavily involved in a church summer camp, with Tobin Esperance, because James' absence would limit the band's summer practicing and touring. As Esperance had been with the band as a roadie for a while, the transition was an easy one.

On February 4, 1997, the band produced their first full-length album, entitled Old Friends from Young Years. Still touring heavily, they supported bands such as Incubus, Powerman 5000, Hed PE, Snot, Far, Earth, Wind & Fire and Static-X.

In 1998, they released an EP titled 5 Tracks Deep. It sold more than 1,000 copies in its first month of release. In 1999, they produced another EP, which would end up being their last independent release, titled Let 'Em Know. Its success caught the attention of Warner Music Group, who as part of a development deal provided a small amount of money for the production of a five-track promo-demo CD. The band decided they wanted influential rock producer Jay Baumgardner on board to produce the record. In an interview with HitQuarters, Baumgardner said, “At first I wasn’t really convinced it would work out, but then I saw a video of them performing at a club - I saw all these kids going wild, knowing the songs by heart - and that’s when I realized that they definitely had potential.”

Warner Brothers was not convinced by the demo, however, and elected not to sign them. The unreleased disc included the songs "Infest", "Last Resort", "Broken Home", "Dead Cell", and "She Loves Me Not" - the first four would later feature on their Infest album, and the last on Lovehatetragedy.

Soon after, DreamWorks Records offered the band a recording contract.

On April 25, 2007, it was announced that drummer Dave Buckner would be sitting out the band's current tour. A statement issued by the group's record label said, "Buckner has taken time off from touring with the band due to personal matters". He was expected to rejoin the group later. Jacoby Shaddix later confirmed in an interview with Launch Radio Networks that Dave had checked himself into rehab, stating "Dave, he went to rehab and went to go clean his act up 'cause he was out of his mind". Unwritten Law drummer, Tony Palermo filled in on drums for touring duties for a short time until Lawrence, Kansas drummer Adam Kuntzsch picked up the sticks and rocked with the band until 2011 when he left the band for personal reasons undisclosed.

On January 28, 2008 Jacoby announced on Papa Roach's MySpace that Buckner would officially be parting ways with Papa Roach for good. He stated that Dave was still trying to get his life back together. Jacoby also mentioned that the band would be going back to the Paramour Mansion for the next month to begin work on their fifth studio album. Tony Palermo would continue drumming with the band for their upcoming album and for their tour in support of the album.

On June 29, the band's former label, Geffen Records, released a greatest hits compilation of the band's biggest hits, titled ...To Be Loved: The Best of Papa Roach. The band, however, told fans not to buy it, saying that the band was making no money off of the album's sales and that the label released the album against the band's will. Masters and/or copyrights by Papa Roach are represented by Downtown Music Publishing. The band no longer owns the rights to their songs, but can still play the songs live.

On August 24, 2012, Papa Roach announced they would be cancelling the remaining dates of the 2012 Uproar Festival due to emergency vocal surgery for vocalist Jacoby Shaddix. Shaddix, diagnosed with a nodule on his left vocal cord, had stated that he was having trouble with his voice on previous tours before Uproar Festival. As a result, he will not be able to sing until 2 months after the surgery. On September 7, 2012, Shaddix posted a tweet on the official Papa Roach Twitter page announcing that "The doctor says my vocal chords look like they are healing very well. So happy, so blessed, so grateful"

In their early independent releases and on their first two major label albums, Infest and Lovehatetragedy, the band tended to use nu metal and rap metal. Additionally, with their 2009 album, Metamorphosis, as the name expresses, the band feels that their music is going through a transformation to "stuff that's...harder and faster",compared to the softer sound of their last few albums. Allmusic has compared the band's recent work to 1980s glam metal, Allmusic staff writer Stephen Thomas Erlewine wrote "At the close of the 2000s, the quartet has shed the rap and the angst, ditching all the alt-metal accoutrements to become a knowing update of an '80s Sunset Strip sleaze rock outfit."

Frontman Jacoby Shaddix said the following in an interview with the Dallas Music Guide regarding the band no longer using rapping in their music: "...the rapping's gone! I don't feel like rapping. I'm just over that...I just want to be a rocker. It's what I wanted to be when I was a kid". Shaddix has added this remark in another interview: "We’re a band that tries to walk that line between metal, hardcore, punk rock and pop music, and we do our best at trying to make it all cool".
Guitarist Jerry Horton said later in an interview by VerdamMnis Magazine that "It's kind of a natural thing for us, we've always been changing throughout the years. Of course, there are some things that stay the same in our sound but we do like to try new things to sort of stretch out a little bit our basis and therefore make it more interesting". He also said that the band is going to explore "electronic sounds for the next record".

He subsequently met Paul Tucker who was also studying at Newcastle Northumbria University and was working at the same bar as Tunde – their partnership began and they formed Lighthouse Family.
In 2005, he appeared on the BBC Television one-off special, Strictly African Dancing. He came last, but he learned the Bata dance in the process.
On 12 November 2006, Baiyewu appeared in an ITV documentary called Faith in Music. This documentary charted his life and music, from his roots in Africa, through Lighthouse Family and into his current solo incarnation. It also showed him performing an acoustic set featuring tracks from his latest album.
In January 2007, Baiyewu held his first tour in over four years (the last time being with Lighthouse Family). He did four concerts from 13 to 16 January 2007 in Edinburgh, Manchester, Wolverhampton and London respectively. He combined his solo material with Lighthouse Family hits and dedicated each and every song to his nephew Funto.
Baiyewu released his second solo album, Diamond In A Rock, in the UK on 4 March 2013.

Baiyewu is an alumnus of Northumbria University, having completed an Accountancy degree in 1994.
In March 2007, Baiyewu married Tope Adeshina, a young Nigerian model, in Lagos, Nigeria. They live in the UK.
His mother went on to marry former Nigerian president Olusegun Obasanjo who, like both her and Baiyewu himself, is of the Yoruba ethnic group.
